Our Story
Stray Cat Blues began as a grassroots organization founded by Linda Weber in 1991 and incorporated in 1997 and now operates a prolific network of foster homes where cats and kittens are cared for and socialized to help them become compatible house pets.
"I started actively rescuing cats when I moved to my current location in 1991 and I was on my own pretty much for a few years. The name "Stray Cat Blues" came to me on a day when I could not do more to help all the cats that needed help. The actual incorporation did not come until 1997."
- Linda Weber
"We started out in this little pet store in Lansdale called Lansdale Feed, with only two adoption cages. In the early days we were doing maybe 50 adoptions a year. Then one of the board members got wind that a big pet store was coming to Lansdale, and that was PetSmart, and they were looking for rescues for their adoption center. So when the PetSmart opened in Montgomeryville we went there and have been there for about 20 years. That's considered our flagship store and what really put us on the map.
It's kind of grown away from being grassroots. We now we have board of directors. In 2009, when PetSmart opened that October at Providence Town Center, during the height of the recession, the shopping center was really a ghost town for a long time, with only Wegmans and Staples. We really struggled for a while. Now we're celebrating the 10th year of our relationship with that PetSmart in October."

SUSSI SEYBERT
TREASURER
Sussi embarked on her journey with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, paving her way towards becoming an Actuary. However, life's course took a delightful turn when she retired in 1998 to prioritize raising her daughter. During this phase, she found herself immersed in the world of volunteering for nonprofits, an endeavor she's pursued passionately since 2000. Her daughter’s alma mater, Germantown Academy, set the foundation for her commitment to community service, which she further expanded through her involvement with organizations like Alex's Lemonade and Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House. Sussi's professional journey intertwined with technology, as it became a crucial tool for her actuarial work. Self-taught and driven, she seamlessly transitioned into the role of IT manager for personal business and all her volunteer efforts.
Sussi's association with SCB commenced in 2015, initially delving into staffing responsibilities. Her dedication soon became evident when she took on the role of fostering a lone kitten in August 2016, an experience that transformed into a permanent commitment, affectionately termed a "foster failure." Despite a brief hiatus, she returned in January 2018, diving headfirst into various tasks, from janitorial duties to administrative responsibilities. Over the years, her role expanded to encompass crucial aspects of SCB's operations, including intake, website management, and team infrastructure development, leveraging her expertise in technology. Joining the board in 2019 marked a milestone in her journey, solidifying her commitment to SCB's mission.
For Sussi, the essence of cat rescue lies in the profound sense of fulfillment derived from saving lives. Her most cherished moments come during bottle feeding sessions, where she's captivated by the innocence and purity embodied in each tiny feline, a sight that fills her heart with immeasurable joy. She wants to save them all.
Sussi's advice for those considering volunteering: “Volunteering is a must for everyone, we must give back for all we've been given. But if you are thinking about becoming a vet, STOP AND DO IT!!!!! Do everything in your power to fulfill that dream. It is a blessing, and my biggest regret!”
ELLYN HATSTAT
SECRETARY
Ellyn holds a Bachelor of Science in Biobehavioral Health from Penn State and furthered her education with an MBA from Boston University. She is currently a Director in the pharmaceutical industry, leading oncology drug development programs.
Her involvement with Stray Cat Blues began in 2017 when she started fostering for the organization. Over the years, her roles have evolved, and she has embraced various responsibilities within the Stray Cat Blues family. From being a foster home coordinator to her current position as the Secretary of the Board of Directors, she has found a deep sense of purpose in contributing to the organization's growth. Additionally, she manages our medical supply inventory.
Cat rescue, while incredibly rewarding, comes with its challenges. The most daunting aspect for Ellyn is acknowledging that we can't save every homeless cat. It's emotionally and physically taxing, and burnout is a real concern. However, the rewards far outweigh the challenges. One of the most fulfilling experiences for her is taking in vulnerable orphaned kittens who have lost their mothers. The round-the-clock work of bottle-feeding them becomes a labor of love, witnessing their growth, playful antics, and eventually finding them loving forever homes.
For those considering volunteering or adopting, her advice is rooted in her experience of fostering over 200 cats: “If you feel like you can’t foster because ‘you’d keep them all’ reminding yourself that ‘goodbye is the goal’ is essential. While falling in love with each furry friend is inevitable, the greater goal is to find them a loving home and make room for the next litter in need. Trust me, you won't keep them all, and the impact of your efforts will make a HUGE difference in the lives of so many kitties in need. Join us in the rewarding journey of cat rescue!”
LINDA M. WEBER
BOARD MEMBER
Linda's journey in academia led her to Pennsylvania State University, where she obtained a Bachelor's of Science degree in Quantitative Business Analysis. Her professional trajectory unfolded in the pharmaceutical industry, where she amassed over three decades of experience as a Statistical/Clinical Programmer and was president of her own consulting business for 20 years.
With a heart dedicated to feline welfare, Linda intermittently fostered for two decades and in 2018 she joined SCB. The support of fellow SCB volunteers has led to her fostering year-round and deepening her involvement. Beyond fostering, Linda delved into various roles within the organization, including data compilation for the Shelter Animals Count National Database, membership in the Communication and Fundraising Team, Grant Team, and Event Team. Her dedication culminated in her appointment to the Board in March 2021. In 2022, she played a pivotal role in implementing new animal management software and joined the Rescue Software Team, showcasing her versatility and unwavering dedication to SCB's mission.
Linda finds profound fulfillment in knowing that her efforts in foster care prepare cats for a lifetime of love and companionship with their human counterparts, especially when she sees the delight in children's faces upon adopting their new best friend.
Linda's advice for those considering volunteering resonates with a resounding call to action: “DO IT! Stray Cat Blues has many various opportunities to volunteer and is a group of people that goes above and beyond to help kittens and cats and the humans they encounter. Animal rescue is not easy but volunteering with SCB comes with support that is uncommon in other animal rescues. There are diverse areas that need resources and volunteering with this group can offer opportunities to grow and learn skills that are rewarding and lifelong all while helping furry friends. Adopting a rescued kitten or cat can bring companionship and purpose to your life. We rescue cats of all different colors, genders and personalities. SCB can help find one (or two) that fits you the BEST!”
HEATHER HEILMAN
BOARD MEMBER - Medical Liaison
Heather's journey is a testament to her passion for healing, rooted in her attainment of a Masters of Science in Nursing from LaSalle University and her subsequent certification as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). Armed with expertise and compassion, she channels her medical skills toward the welfare of our feline companions.
For seven years, Heather has been a vital part of Stray Cat Blues (SCB), wearing multiple hats within the organization. Her dedication knows no bounds, as she volunteers as a trapper, fosters cats in need, coordinates foster homes, and serves on both the emergency medical response and medical support teams. Heather's diverse roles underscore her unwavering commitment to the well-being of every cat under SCB's care.
Heather confronts the challenges of cat rescue head-on, particularly when faced with stabilizing severely ill kitties. Yet, amidst the difficulties lies the profound reward of witnessing their transformation. From despair to a spark of life in their eyes, Heather finds solace in the resilience of these animals and the opportunity to provide them with the medical assistance they so desperately need. Her mantra, "saving one cat will not change the world, but for that one cat, the world will change forever," encapsulates the essence of SCB's mission and drives her relentless dedication.
One of the most profound realizations for Heather is the significant impact she can have on each and every cat she rescues. Their resilience serves as a constant wellspring of inspiration, fueling her determination to continue her lifesaving work.
Heather's message to those considering volunteering resonates with a call to action: “For those considering volunteering, I encourage you to take the leap. While fostering may seem daunting initially, the joy of rescuing cats and placing them into loving forever homes outweighs any apprehension. Remember, your efforts have the power to save lives. Whether through fostering, adoption, donation, or volunteering, you can make a significant difference in the lives of cats”
JAN HANOVER
BOARD MEMBER
Jan was born and raised in Montgomery County, PA. She made a career with the federal government, the last 20 years of which were spent as the Administrative Officer for a major USDA research facility in New York. After taking an early retirement, she moved back home to PA. All of her work experience has been in the fields of budget, accounting, and administration.
While living in NY, she was introduced to the world of rescue and TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return). The neighborhood where she lived had a feral colony that was out of control. At first, she tried to manage the situation herself by feeding some of the females, trapping and spaying them, grabbing the kittens, socializing them, and finding homes. That proved futile though; the numbers were beyond her capabilities. She sought the help of a local rescue group, S.A.V.E.S. (Spay and Vaccinate Every Stray), and soon became a volunteer with them. Together, they rounded up all of the remaining unaltered cats they could find. This experience was life-changing! Being able to make such a positive impact on the lives of these innocent creatures was truly rewarding.
Upon returning to PA, one of the first things on Jan’s “to do” list was to find a local cat rescue with which to volunteer. Once she learned about Stray Cat Blues, she recognized that this was an excellent organization and the right fit for her. She learned the ropes by starting as a cage cleaner at PetSmart. When an opportunity opened up at Whiskers Way Station, she jumped at the chance. This became her happy place! She loves the cheerful environment and the mission. They may joke that it’s the SCB Finishing School, but it’s true. She takes scared, distrustful kitties and gradually shows them the peace and contentment of being loved by a caring human. She has such an emotional investment in their success. When “graduation day” comes around and they are adopted it’s bittersweet. She is so proud of how far they’ve come and will miss them, but with them happily settled into their new home, there is now room for the next little life to change.

SUSAN GUTHRIE
FOSTER HOME COORDINATOR
Susan has been involved in animal rescue since she was a young girl, specializing in pit bull rescue out of college. With a degree in Marine Science and Biology, she has over 20 years of experience as an environmental scientist. She used her passion for caring for animals to run a successful pet care business in Williamsburg, VA for 10 years. All the while volunteering with local shelters, conservation organizations and mentoring children.
Her love of animals led her to Stray Cat Blues in December 2023 as Foster Home Coordinator. She is inspired daily working with the amazing SCB foster family to help as many cats and kittens as possible. Above all, Susan loves seeing how so many wonderful people will come together and do everything possible to help a previously unwanted animal. There are so many sad stories that come with the cats and kittens that come into SCB, but nothing restores faith in humanity more than seeing how many people will bend over backwards and spend their last dime just to help a single cat or kitten. Susan cherishes watching the process of rescuing a scared, unloved kitty transform into a healthy, well loved family member.
Susan has found few things in life that are more rewarding than rescuing, fostering and adopting an innocent loving animal. Especially with the support of a well run rescue like SCB. You will always know that your efforts are appreciated and that you are making a real difference in the community.
